Top 10 Job Seeking Tips - Ask a Recruiter

If you're looking for a job, you've got to know who you're dealing with. Getting job seeking advice from recruiters is a great place to start; they are the people who are reading your resume first!

We've compiled a list of ten tips for job seekers straight from our recruiting team to help you with your job search.

1. Join LinkedIn

LinkedIn is essential for today's job seekers. Not only will recruiters check out your LinkedIn profile after receiving your resume, but they also will reach out to you with jobs that might not even be posted yet! Keep your profile up to date with keywords so that when recruiters perform searches, your name will show up.

2. Network, network, network

The best way to find a job is through referrals or people in your network. Never stop networking...you never know who you might meet and how they might help you later on!

3. Have a clear understanding of both your long term and short term goals.

If you aren't sure of your goals, how are you sure you'll fit into the company you're looking to join? Be clear on what your goals are and make sure they match up with the types of positions you're applying for.

4. Always research the company before interviewing.

Nothing looks worse in an interview than not knowing the company at all (except maybe lying). Do some research: google the company before you head in for an interview. You'll be thankful you did.

5. Don't apply for every single job.

Read the job description before you hit apply! Nothing irks recruiters more than people who aren't qualified applying to positions that they clearly don't match well with!

6. Join professional and industry organizations.

This is a great way to network! Many professional and industry organizations also offer great professional development opportunities.

7. Develop an elevator pitch and use it.

Use it at career fairs, interviews, networking events, wherever you can. Being able to quickly tell someone who you are and what you've done can come in handy!

8. Polish your resume and show your value.

Cater your resume to the job you're applying for and show how you can add value to the company. This requires thought and research but it really makes your resume stand out.

9. Practice interviewing and get feedback.

Prepare yourself for interviewing and get feedback on your technique. It helps to know how you can improve.

10. Build a strong list of references.

Always ask before you offer someone's name. Find people who would say positive things about you and who know your work ethic and performance.
